The Cabeço da Mina Interpretive Center is located in the village of Assares, within the municipality of Vila Flor. This space is situated in the Vale da Vilariça area, a region known for its natural surroundings and the serenity of the Trás-os-Montes landscape, inviting exploration and discovery.
Dedicated to revealing the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Vilariça region, the Cabeço da Mina Interpretive Center offers an opportunity to understand the long history of human occupation and local biodiversity. It is a place designed to guide visitors through knowledge about geology, fauna, and flora, complementing the experience with information about the ancient communities that shaped this territory.
One of the central points of the Interpretive Center is the presentation of a significant archaeological find: a collection of anthropomorphic stelae. These prehistoric sculptures, approximately four thousand years old, were created by the first agro-pastoral communities who lived in the valley around 2,000 BCE. The symbolism of these pieces, which refer to the human figure, suggests that the peoples of that era were connected to a vast network of cultural interactions that extended across Europe, especially in the Mediterranean basin. This archaeological collection is recognized for its public and scientific importance.
In addition to detailing ancient human occupation, the Cabeço da Mina Interpretive Center provides a comprehensive overview of the area's natural evolution. The exhibition itinerary addresses the underlying geology of the region, showing how the Vilariça Fault formed over millions of years. The space also highlights the diversity of native flora and fauna through photographic panels and detailed illustrations, accompanied by informative texts. The visit is enriched by a documentary that traces a temporal journey from the Upper Paleolithic to the end of the Iron Age, before the influence of the Roman Empire in this territory.
