The Forte S. João de Deus Memory Centre is located in the city of Bragança, in the parish of Sé, Santa Maria e Meixedo. The site occupies a historically strategic position in the urban fabric, once vital for the region's defence. Its placement reflects the military importance Bragança has always held throughout the centuries, benefiting from a panoramic view that, although not its primary focus, complements its historical and territorial relevance.
This centre occupies a space with deep historical resonance. The construction of Forte S. João de Deus in the 17th century was a direct response to the need to strengthen the city's and borders' defensive system after the Restoration of Portugal's Independence in 1640. On the site where a hermitage once stood, a fortification was erected that witnessed and shaped various experiences of the city of Bragança. Its existence underscores the importance of a military presence in the defence of national territory, particularly in this border region.
Inaugurated in 2013, the Forte S. João de Deus Memory Centre is a testament to the recovery and valorisation of historical heritage. The buildings, which once quartered the 3rd Hunter Battalion, underwent urban requalification that allowed for a harmonious coexistence between past and present. The space is dedicated to exploring the relevance of military action in Bragança, offering visitors an informative experience through interactive modules and panels that present historical reconstitutions of the Brigantine territory throughout the centuries.
