Location

The Castro de São João das Arribas is located in the area that gives it its name, next to the village of Aldeia Nova, in the municipality of Miranda do Douro. Its location is remarkable, rising on the "arribas" (cliffs) of the International Douro, within the Douro International Natural Park. From here, it is possible to enjoy an unobstructed view over the deep valley of the Douro river, framed by the imposing natural landscape of the region.

Traces of the Past

This site is an ancient fortified settlement, whose origins date back to the Iron Age. Over time, the Castro de São João das Arribas witnessed different human occupations, with evidence of its use also during the Roman era. Its historical relevance was officially recognized with its classification as a National Monument in 1910, highlighting the value of its archaeological heritage.

Archaeological Aspects

During a visit to the Castro de São João das Arribas, it is possible to identify the remains of the ancient defense structure. Prominent features include the remnants of a wall and a ditch, which marked the limits of the settlement. On site, there are also ruins of constructions that offer an idea of the organization of life in this primitive settlement. Archaeological excavations carried out have uncovered various objects that attest to the long history and human presence at this site.

The Natural Surroundings of the Arribas

The landscape surrounding the Castro de São João das Arribas is a central element of its appeal. Located within the Douro International Natural Park, the site is characterized by the abrupt slopes of the Douro river canyon, which not only provided natural defense to its ancient inhabitants but also create a dramatic and impressive setting. The geology of the area, with its granitic formations and the peculiarities of tafoni (rock erosion forms), contribute to the uniqueness of the natural environment that can be observed.
