The Castle and the Walled Village of Ansiães are located in the area known as Vila Velha de Ansiães, in the municipality of Carrazeda de Ansiães. This historic site rises prominently, benefiting from an elevated position that provides wide views over the surrounding landscape. Its topographic placement not only highlights its strategic importance throughout time but also offers a serene environment and a unique perspective on the region.
This heritage complex, which includes the castle and the remains of the ancient walled village, offers a journey back in time to the organization of a medieval settlement. Its structure is notable for its division into two distinct platforms: one corresponds to the alcáçova, the most fortified and central part of the castle, and the other housed the residential area of the village. By exploring this space, it is possible to glimpse how life unfolded within the walls, revealing aspects of urbanization and society of yesteryear.
The defensive complex of Ansiães constitutes one of its most striking features, attesting to the strategic importance of the site throughout the centuries. The military architecture present in its walls and remaining structures reflects the defensive engineering characteristic of the era. These fortified elements not only served the function of protecting their inhabitants but also shaped the daily life of the community that resided here.
Inside the walled village complex, the Church of S. Salvador represents a point of particular cultural and artistic interest. Its heritage includes one of the most relevant examples of Portuguese Romanesque: its tympanum. The iconography presented, namely the theme of the Pantocrator, is a testament to the artistic richness and profound religious symbolism characteristic of the medieval period, constituting a piece of great historical and aesthetic value.
