The Solhapa rock shelter is located about three kilometers from the parish of Duas Igrejas, in the municipality of Miranda do Douro, Portugal.
This is an archaeological site of great historical importance.
The cave has an engraving on the ceiling that resembles representations found in other countries, such as Spain and France. It is interpreted as the representation of a sorcerer. The human figure has a trapezoidal head with the tips resembling a pair of branches. In the pelvis, two lines are interpreted as a tail and an erect phallus.
In addition to the engraving on the ceiling, there are other sculptures on the interior walls and floor of the shelter. These sculptures present an important iconographic diversity, including cupules, perpendicular lines, semicircles, and rectilinear and interconnected bars, forming almost labyrinthine figures. Representations of snakes and human figures are also found.
The figures present in the shelter are chronologically datable between the end of the Neolithic and the beginning of the Chalcolithic and the Bronze Age.
The Solhapa archaeological site is relevant to understanding the history and culture of the ancient civilizations that inhabited the region.
The site is accessible for visitation, allowing tourists to get to know these fascinating rock engravings up close.
