The Water Park Gerês is located in Vilar da Veiga, in the municipality of Terras de Bouro, integrated into the mountainous landscape of the Peneda-Gerês National Park. It is situated on the shore of a clear water reservoir, with a small strip of sand or gravel that functions as a river "beach," framed by green, undulating slopes.
The setting is markedly natural: from the observation point on the shore, one can see gentle peaks and deep valleys that reflect light onto the water's surface, conferring a sense of spaciousness and serenity even with the presence of activity. The surroundings combine the contrast between the calm body of water and the rugged reliefs of the mountains, creating a visual frame that extends beyond the park itself.
The area offers a wide view of the lake and the surrounding elevations. The light on the water, especially during the more golden hours of the day, creates shimmering reflections and a play of shadows on the slopes. Typical mountain vegetation covers the slopes, giving the impression that the leisure space is nestled in a protected natural pocket. The combination of water with the mountains in the background lends a distinctive character, different from coastal beaches, and evokes a mountain experience with a significant water presence.
From the beach side, it is possible to observe small boats and floating structures aligned on the water, as well as the presence of small recreational boats. The transition between the shore and the reservoir is made through platforms that extend over the water, incorporating inflatable equipment that adds a dynamic component to the static mountain landscape.
The Water Park consists of a set of floating elements that form a kind of aquatic circuit on the reservoir. There are interconnected inflatable surfaces that allow one to climb, jump, and balance, creating physical challenges in direct contact with the water. The presence of small recreational boats, such as pedal boats with playful shapes and light boats, suggests the possibility of calm exploration of the water's surface and discreet interaction with the environment.
In addition to the inflatables, there are areas designated for sliding and balancing activities, which require some physical strength and dexterity, especially on wet surfaces. These elements add an active component to the location, where one alternates between resting by the shore and more intense presence in the water, creating a balance between contemplation and movement.
The coexistence between the natural environment and the activity in the park generates mixed perceptions. On one hand, there is an acknowledgment of the beauty of the landscape and the pleasant temperature of the water; on the other hand, the movement of boats and equipment can influence the sense of tranquility typical of natural areas. Visitors find a space where aquatic leisure, in part, overlaps with stillness, which calls for a conscious reading of the balance between recreational use and environmental preservation.
Some of the challenges experienced at the site relate to the accessibility of the floating structures, requiring physical effort to climb onto certain platforms, and to the management of the space near the shore during peak times. The presence of occasional waste in the beach area indicates that the maintenance of the immediate surroundings also depends on the shared responsibility of those who use the space.
