Situated on Avenida 25 de Abril, one of the main arteries of Vila Nova de Famalicão, the Casa-Museu Soledade Malvar is located in the area known as Serralho, in the parish of Calendário. Its central position in the city facilitates access and allows for easy integration into a stroll through the urban surroundings.
This space was born from the gesture of Maria da Soledade Ramos Malvar Osório, an antique dealer with strong ties to Vila Nova de Famalicão. She decided to donate her valuable art collection and the building where she lived and had her antique shop to the municipality, with the aim of creating a house-museum.
The property, designed by architect Manoel da Silva Passos Júnior, was built in the 1950s to be her residence and workplace, housing the famous "Bric-à-Brac" shop. Upon being transformed into a museum, efforts were made to maintain the original design, preserving the intimate and familiar atmosphere that characterized the space and Soledade Malvar herself.
Inside the Casa-Museu, there is a diverse collection of antiques that Soledade Malvar gathered throughout her life. The collection is vast and includes 18th and 19th-century furniture, faience pieces, gold and silver jewelry, paintings, and even sacred art, including a 16th-century image.
It is a collection that reflects her keen eye and declared taste "for everything that was beautiful and good," blending artistic and historical value with personal and affective stories linked to the acquisition of each piece.
Some pieces in the collection deserve particular attention for their uniqueness or historical value. Among them, an impressive Italian Renaissance-style carved cabinet stands out, notable for the richness of its details and symbolism.
Other points of interest include a 16th-century Ançã stone statuette, depicting Saint Margaret, and an old music box, whose wooden mechanism still enchants today with romantic melodies of the era.
In addition to the objects she collected, the Casa-Museu also preserves an important part of Soledade Malvar's personal legacy: her popular poetry writings.
Many of these texts, sometimes in draft form, address everyday themes, memories of her home, and even descriptions of her own collection, offering an intimate and poetic perspective on her life and the space she created.
The Casa-Museu space is not limited to the permanent exhibition of the collection. It also includes a gallery dedicated to temporary displays.
This venue functions as a cultural hub in the municipality, hosting exhibitions that complement the visit and maintain the museum as an active meeting point for the community and visitors.
