The São Lourenço Hill Fort is located on the hill of the same name, in the parish of Vila Chã, municipality of Esposende, district of Braga, in Portugal.

The hill fort has vestiges of occupation dating back to the Chalcolithic period, indicating a long history of human habitation.

Archaeological Excavations

The hill fort has been the target of archaeological interventions since 1985, led by Professor Doctor Carlos Alberto Brochado de Almeida, from the University of Porto, with the participation of local volunteers and students from various universities.

Architecture of the Dwellings

The houses found in the hill fort have different shapes, such as circular and sub-rectangular, with straw roofs supported by schist slabs. During Romanization, tiles were introduced to cover the roofs.

Artifacts Found

During the excavations, several artifacts were discovered, including fragments of indigenous and Roman pottery, Roman silver coins, glass, and iron and bronze utensils.

Heritage Protection

The São Lourenço Hill Fort was classified as a Property of Public Interest, recognizing its historical and cultural importance.

Exhibition at the Municipal Museum

Part of the archaeological material found is on display at the Esposende Municipal Museum, offering visitors the opportunity to learn more about the history and objects discovered at the hill fort.
