The Totus Tuus monument is located in the heart of the city of Braga, situated within the gardens of Avenida Central. Although the broader area is known as Santa Tecla, it is on the bustling Avenida Central that the monument stands out, offering an inviting atmosphere within its green space. Its location allows it to be easily spotted by those strolling along this main thoroughfare of Braga's urban center.
The name Totus Tuus has Latin origins and translates to "totally yours". This was the personal motto of Pope John Paul II, expressing his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary. By choosing these words, the Pope emphasized a total and unconditional surrender, a concept of faith that the monument in Braga seeks to evoke and honor, serving as a tribute to that spiritual connection.
The structure of Totus Tuus stands out due to its unique composition and choice of materials. It is composed of three distinct obelisks, made of stone and granite, which rise in a triangular shape. These elements, arranged in an embracing manner, surround a central piece resembling a vessel or cauldron. The monument is harmoniously integrated into the garden landscape, resting on a well-maintained lawn, which enhances its presence in the urban space.
