The Tower of Santa Maria de Abade de Neiva is located in the parish of Abade de Neiva, in the municipality of Barcelos. It stands in an elevated position, halfway up a hill, offering a wide view of the surrounding landscape.

From the site, one can contemplate the vast countryside, once covered with cork oaks and pine trees. On clear days, one's gaze can reach the city of Braga in the distance and, towards the sea, the coastline of Esposende or Viana do Castelo, offering a striking landscape setting.

Historical Memory

The history of the Tower of Santa Maria de Abade de Neiva is intrinsically linked to the church to which it is adjoined. The original foundation of the temple dates back to the 12th century, initiated by Queen D. Mafalda. Although the initial project was not fully completed, the architectural complex admired today developed over centuries, taking on its current form.

The tower observed was probably erected in the 15th century, giving an imposing presence to the complex. This monument is an important testimony to the region's architecture and has been classified as a National Monument since 1927, a recognition of its historical and cultural value.

Architectural Features

The Tower of Santa Maria de Abade de Neiva features a robust structure with a quadrangular base. It is adjoined to the church's façade, standing out for its solidity and appearance. Its upper part is crowned by pyramidal merlons, which give it a fortified and distinctive image.

Over time, the tower underwent several interventions that shaped its physiognomy. In the 18th century, for example, two bell towers were opened, a detail that integrated into its original construction, adapting it to the period's needs and enriching its architectural distinctiveness.
