Alvite Tower is located in the village of Alvite, in the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto. The complex is situated on a rural hillside, in an elevated position offering views over the Rio de Ouro valley. The property, still dedicated to agriculture, is surrounded by cultivated fields and vineyards. Access is via an avenue sheltered by cedars, providing a peaceful arrival to the site.

Architecture and Composition

This remarkable example of a manor house is built in the "Tower House" style. Its structure is composed of several rectangular bodies organized around an inner courtyard. At the center of the courtyard, there is an octagonal tank fountain. The tower, the element that gives the complex its name, rises imposingly, integrating into the main facade of the residence, to which a chapel is adjoined.

Detail Richness

Alvite Tower stands out for the meticulous stonework present throughout its construction. The main portal, facing east, is adorned with the coats of arms of the families who resided there, such as the Leites, Bacelares, Pereiras, and Abreus. On the tower, one can observe the exquisite detail in the pilasters flanking it, in the pinnacles and gargoyles crowning its angles, as well as in a small bell tower. Inside the courtyard, a sheltered veranda with perfect-arch arcades adds a touch of elegance to the space.

Historical Heritage

The history of Alvite Tower dates back at least to the 17th century, having been an important manor house. João Leite Pereira, registered as the first lord of the place, died here in 1658. Over time, the complex was enriched, with the construction of its portals probably dating from the 18th century. The complex's chapel, dedicated to the Holy Family, was affected by the 1755 earthquake but was later recovered. In the 20th century, the property underwent extensive restoration and reconstruction work. Alvite Tower is recognized for its importance in Portuguese heritage, being classified as a Monument of Public Interest.
