Elevator of Good Jesus

Category: Civil Architecture > Elevator

District: Braga > Braga > Senhora da Rocha

Location

The Elevador do Bom Jesus is located in the parish of Nogueiró and Tenões, in the municipality of Braga, integrated into the landscape of Bom Jesus do Monte. This funicular connects the base of the mount to its summit, where the sanctuary is situated. The route unfolds along a slope covered by dense vegetation, offering a perspective of the natural surroundings.

A Historical Legacy

Inaugurated on March 25, 1882, the Elevador do Bom Jesus is a pioneering work, being the first funicular to be built on the Iberian Peninsula. Its creation was the result of the vision of Manuel Joaquim Gomes, a businessman from Braga who sought a solution for the steep ascent of the mount.

The project was initially conceived by the Swiss engineer Niklaus Riggenbach, with the important technical collaboration and on-site supervision of the Portuguese engineer Raul Mesnier du Ponsard. The historical and architectural relevance of this elevator was officially recognized in 2013 when it was classified as a Monument of Public Interest.

Ingenuity and Sustainability

This elevator stands out for its global uniqueness, currently being the oldest funicular in the world in service that operates through an ingenious water counterweight system. Two cabins move on parallel tracks, connected by a cable.

The operation is based on the filling and emptying of water tanks located in each cabin. The water, sourced from local springs and mines, is used to create the necessary weight difference for movement, making it a remarkable example of sustainable engineering for its time. The amount of water is adjusted according to the passengers, ensuring efficient and ecological travel. The wooden sleepers supporting the track were themselves repurposed from trees felled for the construction of the ramp.

The Ascent Experience

With a route of 274 meters and a height difference of over a hundred meters, the journey on the Elevador do Bom Jesus provides a tranquil experience. The cabins glide along the slope in a path parallel to the imposing Staircases of Bom Jesus, offering those ascending a different perspective of the landscape and the structure of the mount.

The ascent, which lasts only a few minutes, allows for a comfortable reach to the top of Bom Jesus, culminating next to the equestrian statue of São Longuinho, on the upper platform. It is a distinct way to enjoy the natural environment and the monumentality of the site.
