The Chapel of the Falls is located in Senhora da Rocha, in the municipality of Braga, in an area of particular elevation. It is situated at the beginning of a notable stepped path that develops uphill. Its presence marks one of the first moments of this ascent, inviting contemplation from the starting point of the route.

Architectural Features

This construction, erected in the 19th century, stands out for its singular hexagonal shape, which culminates in a distinct six-sided pyramidal dome. Its peculiar architecture gives it a striking presence in the landscape and spiritual context of the area, integrating harmoniously into the path that surrounds it and contributing to the visual richness of the site.

The Scene Represented and Symbolism

Inside the Chapel of the Falls, the visitor is confronted with a powerful sculptural representation of Jesus' suffering. The scene evokes the moment of Christ's First Fall under the weight of the cross, one of the most moving episodes of the Via Sacra. The sculptural ensemble captures Jesus' exhaustion and pain, in a moment of profound humanity and vulnerability, inviting reflection on perseverance in the face of adversity.

Above the entrance, an inscription in Latin, "ET VENERUNT IN LOCUM QUI DICITUR GOLGOTHA" (which translates as 'And they came to a place called Golgotha'), announces the central theme of the Passion. Although Golgotha refers to the final location of Calvary, this space is situated at an initial point of the staircase, symbolic of the first steps of a journey of sacrifice and overcoming difficulties throughout life.
