The Chapel of the Ascent to Calvary is integrated into a remarkable religious complex in the municipality of Braga, more specifically in the Senhora da Rocha area. It is located on an elevated platform, offering a westward view of the city of Braga. Its position along the route provides an experience of serenity, set within a natural and carefully maintained environment.
This octagonal chapel is the eighth found along the Way of Calvary, a path of deep significance. Its presence is noted in ancient records, such as a map drawn by Carlos Amarante, which underscores its historical importance and longevity. Its architectural style, with an octagonal plan, distinguishes it and invites careful observation of its details. Above the entrance, a Latin inscription, "BAJULANS SIBI CRUCEM, EXIVIT IN CALVARIAE LOCUM", translates to "Bearing his cross, he went forth to the place of Calvary", immediately contextualizing the space's theme.
Inside the Chapel of the Ascent to Calvary, a sculptural representation invites reflection. The set of twelve images, some retouched by sculptor Evangelista Vieira, expressively illustrate the moment when Jesus, bowed under the weight of the cross, is aided by Simon of Cyrene on the way to Calvary. One can observe the depiction of the tormentors with their brutality, a soldier with the standard of the Roman Empire (S.P.Q.R.), and other figures such as Mary Magdalene, Veronica, Our Lady of Sorrows, and even the boy with the nails. The composition evokes physical suffering, but also the gesture of aid that marks this crucial moment.
The circular courtyard where the chapel is situated is embellished with elements that complement its symbolism. Two distinct obelisks, shaped like helical serpents, represent the transition between earthly and spiritual life. From the top of these sculptures, water flows, emphasizing dynamism and fluidity. At the base of each obelisk, four crocodile heads point towards the cardinal directions, enriching the ensemble with symbolic and decorative references.
