The Solar do Souto is located in Barrozinho, in the village of Gandarela de Basto, municipality of Celorico de Basto. Situated on a gentle slope, the building is surrounded by green fields and small groves, remaining far from urban hustle and bustle.
Access is via dirt paths and rural roads, which enhance the tranquil atmosphere and the immersion in the natural landscape typical of the Basto Region.
Dating back to the 17th century, this manor house was erected by the Ribeiro family on even older foundations. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, it benefited from enlargements and restorations promoted by its successive owners, which can be observed in the different architectural styles present.
On May 13, 2013, Ordinance No. 283/2013 classified the property as a Monument of Public Interest, ensuring the preservation of its central features and original elements.
The square-plan building is organized around an inner courtyard reminiscent of conventual structures. To the right stands the chapel, with a bell tower and bulbous dome, while the main facade is distinguished by its pilasters, sash windows, and segmental pediment above the entrance door.
On the ground floor, there is an engraved wooden and glass portal preceding the atrium, flanked by wine cellars and storage areas; on the noble floor, lounges and rooms with wooden ceilings and fresco paintings reinforce the noble character of the complex.
Around the manor house extends a garden punctuated by centuries-old camellias, offering shade and color at different times of the year. This verdant expanse creates a serene setting, where the granite of the facades contrasts with the intense green of the canopies.
The open views over the valley allow one to appreciate the variation of colors in the rural landscape, reinforcing direct contact with the typical nature of northern Portugal.
