The Silo of Memory is located in the city of Braga, in the municipality of Braga, more precisely in the São João do Souto area. It is situated at the roundabout of Praça Conselheiro Torres de Almeida, a well-known transit point in the urban fabric. Its position on a roundabout allows it to be easily observed by those circulating in the area, integrating uniquely into the cityscape.
This monument was inaugurated on April 25, 2014, having been erected to mark the fortieth anniversary of the April 25, 1974 Revolution and, simultaneously, to pay tribute to Francisco Salgado Zenha. Born in Braga in 1923 and deceased in Lisbon in 1993, Salgado Zenha was a prominent lawyer and politician in Portuguese history. Before the Revolution, he dedicated himself to the defense of political prisoners and figures linked to subversive activities. After April 25, he played a fundamental role in the country's democratization process, holding important positions such as Minister of Justice and, later, Minister of Finance in several provisional governments. The Silo of Memory thus serves as a permanent reminder of his legacy and the values of freedom.
The design of the Silo of Memory is by the Braga-born artist Alberto Vieira. The sculpture was executed in stainless steel plate, a material that gives it durability and a contemporary aesthetic. Its form, inspired by an agricultural silo, refers to the idea of a repository or storage, in this case, of collective memory. The work is composed of forty superimposed rings, symbolizing the forty years of the April Revolution. Each of these rings is, in turn, formed by twenty-five individual elements, evoking the image of books or documents. These elements represent knowledge, information, and archives, underscoring the importance of culture and history. With approximately 4 meters in diameter and 8 meters in height, the monument is supported by an internal structure. Next to this central piece, there is a plaque, made of the same material, with an illustration of Salgado Zenha and the inscription "FRANCISCO SALGADO ZENHA 1923-1993", accompanied by an informative text about the work and its meaning.
