The Church of Santa Cruz is located in the heart of the city of Braga, in the parish of São João do Souto. Its central position, in Largo Carlos Amarante, places it at an accessible and vibrant point, integrated into the historic urban fabric, inviting on-foot exploration of the surrounding area.
The history of this church is a reflection of Braga's transformations. Its construction began in the 17th century, around 1625, extending over several decades and phases of work. Initially part of a complex that included a hospital and was linked to a brotherhood, the church served different purposes over time. It was a space that survived troubled periods, including its use as barracks or even a factory, before being returned to its religious function. This troubled journey culminated in significant remodelling works in the 18th century, which gave it part of its current appearance.
The exterior of the Church of Santa Cruz is a striking expression of the Mannerist and Baroque styles. Built entirely of worked stone, the main façade stands out for its symmetry and richness of detail. On the first level, one can observe the columns that frame the entrance portals. A singular architrave displays, in bas-relief, the Instruments of the Passion of Christ, offering a symbolic glimpse. On the upper register, the ornamentation includes representations of the Holy Cross and other elements that evoke the tree of Paradise and royalty. The two bell towers, which flank the central body, complete the impressiveness of the ensemble.
Upon entering, the visitor is enveloped by an atmosphere of profound spirituality and art. The nave, of great height, is covered by a stone vault that impresses with its construction. The main highlight is the gilded woodwork, which sumptuously adorns various elements, such as the organ and the pulpits, testifying to the mastery of 18th-century artists. The side chapels, each with its altarpiece, invite careful observation. The high choir and the chancel also reveal careful ornamentation, including beautiful tile panels that narrate biblical stories, enriching the artistic and devotional experience.
