The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Mós is located in the village of Carvalheira, in the municipality of Terras de Bouro, in an area known as Assento. Situated on Alto da Carvalheira, this isolated spot, immersed in the forest landscape, offers an elevated position. From here, visitors find expansive views over the natural scenery surrounding the sanctuary.
The construction of this sanctuary dates back to the early 20th century. The project for its construction was formally approved in 1907, with the works completed in 1912 and the official inauguration taking place in July 1913. Its origin is intrinsically linked to the profound worship and devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, promoted in the Mós region by Father Martins Capela, who spearheaded the creation of this space of faith.
The sanctuary's architecture is notable for its resemblance to a keep, evoking the robustness of a medieval castle and giving it a unique presence in the landscape. Dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the monument was recently enriched with the inclusion of tile panels. These panels visually narrate the history of its construction, including one of the most emblematic moments: the transport of the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which, in a symbolic four-day journey, traveled along the ancient Roman road from Braga to Carvalheira.
The sanctuary's location, isolated on a forested hillside, provides an environment of remarkable tranquility and serenity. The elevated position allows for comprehensive views of the surrounding nature, creating an ideal setting for contemplation and for an immersion in the natural beauty of the Terras de Bouro region.
