Ruins of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Conception

Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Braga > Póvoa de Lanhoso > Campos e Louredo > Rego

Location:

Situated in Lugar do Rego, in the parish of Campos and Louredo, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of Conception) is set in a peaceful rural environment. The site is slightly elevated, integrated within a farm property and surrounded by cultivated fields, offering a serene perspective of the surrounding landscape in the municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso.

Its position, close to an old farmhouse, contributes to the picturesque and historic atmosphere of the site.

History and Origins

The origins of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição date back to the 17th century. Its foundation is directly linked to the 1599 will of Father Brás de Leiva Prego, a native of Guimarães, who expressed the desire to have a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição for the celebration of masses.

Over time, the chapel's history was marked by family and religious disputes that led to the transfer of tombs and funerary elements from other churches to this location, giving it a unique narrative within the context of local heritage.

Exterior Architecture

The chapel features a simple, rectangular structure, characteristic of 17th-century religious architecture, with a gabled roof. Its facades, which have been plastered and painted white, are finished with granite quoins and cornices.

On the main facade, beneath the gable featuring a simple arched bell-gable, there is a straight lintel entrance portal, above which a coat of arms has been placed. Elements such as this coat of arms and the modest bell-gable are details that capture the visitor's attention, telling a bit of the history and style of the period.

Interior Traces and Funerary Memory

Despite its current state of disuse, the chapel's interior retains traces that reveal its former function and importance. The flooring is made of granite slabs, where a tombstone with inscriptions stands out in the center, having been transferred to this location from the old parish church.

On the side walls, in specific niches, there are two funerary chests, one of which also bears an inscription. These funerary elements are testaments to the chapel's connection to specific families and its use as a burial site throughout the centuries. The ceiling, which would have been made of wood painted with decorative motifs, and the presence of a holy water font inside, complete the portrait of what this space of devotion once was.
