São Bartolomeu do Mar Beach is intrinsically linked to one of the most notable and ancient cultural manifestations of the region: the Romaria de São Bartolomeu do Mar (Pilgrimage of São Bartolomeu do Mar). Celebrated annually on August 24th, this centuries-old tradition, with roots in the 16th century, attracts a significant presence of people. One of the most emblematic rituals of the pilgrimage is the so-called Holy Bath, in which an odd number of dips are performed in the sea waters. This act is loaded with symbolism, associated with the idea of purification and warding off evils, and is a central part of the community's identity, which remains connected to its beliefs and the sea.
