Fão Beach is located in the Ofir area, a region that is part of the town of Fão, integrated into the municipality of Esposende. Washed by the Atlantic Ocean, this beach is situated south of the Cávado River estuary and is part of the Northern Littoral Natural Park. Its surroundings are dominated by extensive pine forests and a dune system that follows the coastline, creating a natural and tranquil environment where the freshness of the woods blends with the sea breeze.
Fão Beach is characterized by its generous and vast sandy expanse, stretching for a considerable length, offering ample space for its visitors. One of the most striking components of the landscape are its imposing dunes, which rise and frame the beach to the east. These dunes are naturally covered by vegetation and connect to the adjacent pine forests. To preserve this fragile ecosystem and facilitate access to the beach, there are wooden walkways that allow visitors to explore the area and reach the sandy beach conveniently.
One of the most distinctive elements of Fão Beach are the rock formations that emerge from the sea, especially visible during low tide, popularly known as the "Horses of Fão". These quartzitic rocks are a geological outcrop millions of years old, dating from the Ordovician period. Besides their scenic and geological interest, these rocks function as a biodiversity niche, sheltering various marine species and serving as feeding grounds. A local legend tells that, long ago, King Solomon, in gratitude for a warm welcome in the region, brought horses that, after a shipwreck caused by a rough sea, were petrified by goblins, transforming into warnings for navigators.
Fão Beach is a place of remarkable environmental quality, awarded with the Blue Flag, which reflects the excellence of its water and infrastructure. Its natural environment, with the vast sandy beach and the presence of the ocean, invites relaxation and enjoyment of the coastal landscape. For those who enjoy water activities, the beach offers a suitable setting for sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sport fishing, benefiting from the Atlantic waves and atmospheric conditions.
