Apúlia Beach is located in the coastal town of Apúlia, in the municipality of Esposende, right in the heart of the Minho coast. Washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, this beach is part of the town's seafront, being included in the Esposende Coast Protected Landscape Area and the North Coast Natural Park. Its southern limit is marked by a pier and the mouth of the Ribeira da Fonte da Senhora stream.
This beach stands out for its extensive sandy area, punctuated to the north by rocky outcrops that emerge from the waters, especially visible during low tide. The dunes bordering the sandy area play a crucial role in the natural protection of the site, shaping the coastal landscape. Apúlia Beach is renowned for its windy conditions, which, though refreshing, contribute to a dynamic environment by the sea.
Along the dunes of Apúlia, a particular group of windmills can be observed. Built from granite and schist, with a circular and conical shape, these windmills were designed to harness the abundant wind in the region. Today, they have lost their original milling function, being mostly converted into unique summer homes that dot the landscape.
Another distinctive mark of local history is the figure of the Sargaceiro of Apúlia. This secular tradition, dating back at least to the 13th century, was based on the harvesting of sargassum, seaweed that tides deposited on the sandy area. After collection, the sargassum was sun-dried and used as organic fertilizer in the inland agricultural fields, a practice of extreme importance in an agrarian economy where chemical fertilizers did not exist.
Due to its natural characteristics, with special emphasis on its windy conditions, Apúlia Beach is a popular spot for water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing, as well as for sport fishing. Throughout history, this beach gained fame for its richness in iodine, which was believed to bring health benefits. The quality of the bathing environment and space management are consistently recognized, boasting awards such as the Blue Flag and the distinction of Accessible Beach. Its value is also underscored by awards that classify it as one of the most highly valued beaches nationwide.
