The Ponte de Rodas (Bridge of Rodas) gracefully rises over the serene waters of the Homem River, establishing a connection between the parishes of Caldelas (in the municipality of Amares) and Ponte (in the municipality of Vila Verde), set within the landscape of the Braga district. This location, situated in the Barral urbanization, in the locality of Ponte, Vila Verde, offers a tranquil and predominantly rural environment. The riverbanks, at this point, are elevated and shaped by terraces, contributing to the natural beauty of the surroundings.
Built in the Middle Ages, the Ponte de Rodas stands as a remarkable testament to the engineering and routes of yesteryear. In its time, this bridge was a vital crossing point, forming part of the old road that connected the city of Braga to Ponte da Barca. Throughout the centuries, its granite structure has withstood the test of time, maintaining its original function of uniting communities and serving as a window to the past.
With a deck spanning approximately 34 meters and a width of 2.63 meters, the Ponte de Rodas is a masterpiece in granite. Its structure rests on three unequal arches, with the central arch standing out due to its imposing dimensions, approximately 13 meters in span and height, the grandeur of this central arch is, in fact, the origin of its peculiar name. To ensure stability against the force of the current, the bridge features robust buttresses, reinforced by triangular cutwaters upstream and rectangular cutwaters downstream. The side railings, also made of granite ashlar, complement its solid and durable appearance. It is also possible to observe, near one of the bridge's entrances, on the right bank, the presence of "alminhas" (small shrines), an element of popular art that reflects local devotion and beliefs.
The historical and architectural importance of Ponte de Rodas is officially recognized. Since 1910, this bridge has been classified as a National Monument, a status that underscores its invaluable worth to Portuguese cultural heritage. Visiting Ponte de Rodas is, therefore, an opportunity to appreciate a secular structure that continues to play its role, connecting banks and generations, and telling a part of the region's history.
