The Cavez Bridge is located over the Tâmega River, in the parish of Cavez, municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto, in the district of Braga, Portugal.
It has been considered a National Monument since 1910, recognizing its historical and architectural importance.
The bridge was built in the 13th century on the initiative of Frei Lourenço Mendes, who hired master Martin Esteves to carry out the work.
According to a local legend, the inhabitants of the region doubted Martin Esteves' ability to complete the bridge. However, the work was completed successfully and admired for its solidity. It is said that the master died of joy when he saw the bridge finished and was buried next to one of the bridgeheads, with the inscription: "This is the Cavez bridge and here lies who made it".
Over the years, the bridge has undergone few alterations. In the 19th century, adaptations were made for the construction of Royal Road 32, and later sidewalks, iron railings, and stone corbels were added.
In 1959, the bridge suffered damage caused by a flood that broke the downstream wall. In 1960, repair works were carried out that modified the original structure. In 2019, the bridge underwent rehabilitation, including structural reinforcement, pavement replacement, guardrail treatment, and improvements to the drainage system.
The Cavez Bridge is 95 meters long and about 17 meters high. It is composed of five granite arches, three pointed and two round.
