The Pelourinho of Braga stands imposingly in the historic heart of the city, specifically in Largo do Paço, one of its most emblematic squares. Its location, in the former parish of Sé, gives it a unique and highly relevant setting, being integrated into an environment that breathes Braga's rich heritage. Its striking presence in the city's civic and religious center contributes to the solemn and grand atmosphere that envelops visitors to this place.
This monument is a testament to Braga's municipal autonomy, symbolizing the judicial and administrative power the city held throughout the centuries. Erected in central locations, these landmarks were the stage where public justice was administered and official proclamations were read. Although the original was demolished in the 19th century, following the abolition of seigniorial rights, its reconstruction in the 20th century, specifically in 1931, allowed the memory and symbolism of this crucial element of local history to remain alive in Braga's urban landscape.
The Pelourinho of Braga features a sober yet significant structure, characteristic of the Manueline style, although it is a faithful recreation. It rests on a three-step platform, above which rises a square base. The shaft is octagonal and smooth, culminating in a capital decorated with spheres and elements that form a kind of cage. At the top, a sphere completes the composition, a common element that reinforced its role as a point of reference and power.
