Situated on the River Ave, the Serves Bridge marks the boundary between the parishes of Pedome, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, and Gondar, belonging to Guimarães. Its surroundings are characterized by a landscape that combines the serenity of a riverside area with the presence of some constructions that give it an almost urban density. This location allows for a peaceful observation of the landscape accompanying the river's course.
The history of the Serves Bridge dates back to the Middle Ages, with documented references to its construction dating from 1185. Later, in 1258, it was already mentioned as an "old bridge," which highlights its antiquity and enduring importance. For centuries, this bridge played a crucial role in the region's transport and trade routes, serving as an essential link between localities such as Guimarães and Vila do Conde, then a significant seaport. It was also a crossing point for the so-called "royal road" heading to Barcelos, as well as for the road to Vila Nova de Famalicão.
Built of granite, the bridge features a horizontal deck supported by four perfect round arches, though with unequal dimensions. The pillars rising from the riverbed are reinforced with triangular cutwaters, elements that help mitigate the force of the current. However, it is important to note that the Serves Bridge underwent significant restoration and widening interventions in the mid-20th century, which considerably altered its original medieval design. Despite these structural modifications, the bridge has maintained its status as a National Monument since 1938, a recognition of its historical and patrimonial relevance to Portugal. Next to one of its entrances, on the western side, a small modern-era chapel can be observed, which integrates into the surrounding landscape.
