The Thermal Park is situated in the town of Caldas de Vizela, centrally integrated into the urban landscape. Its vast area extends through the zone known as Parque das Termas, offering a large green space that contrasts with the surrounding built environment. The park follows the banks of the River Vizela, a natural element that marks the local landscape and gives it a particularly pleasant setting.
The park's history is intrinsically linked to Vizela's thermal tradition, whose origins are lost in time, dating back at least to the 18th century. The park, as an organized space, was created between 1884 and 1886. This landscape project was signed by Jerónimo Monteiro da Costa, a renowned gardener and landscaper of the time, and featured the contribution of horticulturist José Marques Loureiro in the planting. The space was born to complement and enhance the experience associated with the region's famous thermal waters.
One of the most notable aspects of the Thermal Park is its botanical richness, particularly the exceptional concentration of large trees. Many of these trees, planted when the park was created, have achieved luxuriant growth over more than a century, lending the place a unique impressiveness and grandeur. Considered by many to be Vizela's true "lung," the park extends over more than seven hectares, featuring a diversity of species that create a dense and welcoming natural environment.
The River Vizela plays a central role in the park's identity, flowing through its vicinity. The riverside area next to the park has been enhanced, creating paths and ample green zones that invite visitors to stroll and enjoy the proximity to the water. It is possible to walk along the banks on pedestrian paths and cycle lanes, taking advantage of the serenity and natural beauty that the river's presence provides.
Beyond contemplating nature and strolling along its extensive paths, the Thermal Park offers various opportunities for leisure and activity. It includes a lake that adds a scenic element to the ensemble, a tennis court for sports practice, and an area dedicated to children, with a playground. Within the park, there is also a charming traditional-style chalet and the "Fonseca e Castro" mini-golf course, built in 2010, which offers a playful entertainment option.
