The Standard of D. João I is located at the end of Rua D. João I, in front of the Chapel of São Lázaro, in the parish of Creixomil, municipality of Guimarães, district of Braga, Portugal.
The monument was erected to commemorate the victory of Aljubarrota, after the entry of D. João I into Guimarães in 1386. Although the current standard dates from the 16th century, probably built after the charter of D. Manuel I in 1517, it is not known for sure whether it replaced the original standard. It has been considered a National Monument since 1910.
There are different versions about the origin of the monument. It is believed that it was built by João I of Portugal to fulfill a promise made to Santa Maria de Guimarães, possibly for the victory in the battle of Aljubarrota (1385) or for the conquest of Ceuta (1415).
The Standard of D. João I consists of simple steps that lead to the center, where there is a cross with the cross engraved in Ançã stone.
