Located in the city of Guimarães, in the heart of its Historic Centre, the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza is part of the area classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, specifically in the zone that encompasses the Historic Centre of Guimarães and the Couros Zone. Its position gives it surroundings of great historical value and an atmosphere that harks back to the city's medieval times.
The construction of the Palace dates back to the 15th century, on the initiative of D. Afonso, the first Duke of the House of Braganza, initially serving as a prestigious residence. Throughout the 16th century, it remained the home of the Dukes of Braganza, reflecting the power and influence of this notable family. However, the building went through a long period of abandonment and decay, and was even used as military barracks during the French invasions in 1807, until the 20th century.
Between 1937 and 1959, the Palace underwent an extensive and meticulous restoration, carried out by the architect Rogério de Azevedo, which restored its grandeur. Since 1910, this imposing monument has been classified as a National Monument, recognising its inestimable value to Portuguese heritage.
The palace stands out for its distinct Burgundian style, an influence that D. Afonso I of Braganza brought from his travels across Europe. Its architecture reflects a particular grandeur, with elements that evoke the stately homes of that era. It is important to note that the Palace's current appearance is the result of the recreation carried out during the Estado Novo period, an aspect that continues to generate debate about its historical authenticity and faithfulness to the original design.
Currently, the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza is managed by the Northern Regional Directorate for Culture. The first floor houses a notable Museum, which offers visitors a vast and rich collection. Highlights include Flemish and French tapestries, oriental carpets, period furniture, Chinese porcelain, and a collection of paintings of great artistic value. Among the most famous works, one can admire the Paschal Lamb, attributed to Josefa de Óbidos, and the portrait of D. Catherine of Braganza.
In addition to its museological function, the Palace hosts various cultural activities on its ground floor and occasionally serves as the official residence of the President of the Portuguese Republic during his travels to the North of the country.
