The Astronomical Observatory of Braga is located in the Gualtar Campus area, an integrated part of the locality of Gualtar, in the municipality of Braga. Although it is situated a few kilometers from Braga city center, its position in an urban and inhabited environment necessitates the use of specific technology to counteract the effects of light pollution and ensure the clarity of observations.
This observatory is dedicated to capturing and analyzing a wide range of celestial phenomena. Using a fully robotic equatorial mount telescope and various advanced optical instruments, the facility enables rigorous study of the cosmos. It is possible to observe solar and planetary activity, as well as more distant and faint objects, such as galaxies and nebulae, or phenomena like supernovae and exoplanets, and also to monitor asteroids.
The architecture of the Braga Astronomical Observatory was carefully planned to meet the demands of astronomical research and observation. The building was constructed with materials that promote rapid thermal stabilization, essential for equipment operation. Inside, the optical instruments and sensors are protected by a dome, and an anti-vibration system beneath the main structure ensures maximum image precision, preventing oscillations caused by external movements.
Beyond its primary function of observation and research, the Braga Astronomical Observatory plays an important role in promoting scientific and technological culture. It functions as an active instrument for dissemination and experimentation, encouraging interest in astronomy among various audiences. The observatory is a valuable resource for the development of scientific and technological skills, serving as support for educational projects in schools and higher education institutions.
