The Maritime Museum of Esposende is located in the center of the town, strategically positioned next to the marina. Its location offers a privileged perspective over the mouth of the Cávado River, an area closely guarded by the Forte de São João Batista Lighthouse, located at the bar.

The Emblematic Building

This museum is housed in a building of great historical and symbolic value for Esposende: the old Shipwreck Aid Station, also known as the Lifeboat Station. Inaugurated in 1906, under the patronage of Queen D. Amélia, its original function was to provide aid and rescue to fishermen in distress at sea and along the coast.

Considered one of the city's ex-libris, the building's architecture itself is a testament to the intense and often dangerous connection of the local community with the waters, marking an era of sacrifice and hard work for the fishing class.

The Heritage of the Sea and the River

Esposende owes its existence and identity to a deep connection with the Cávado River and the Atlantic Ocean. The Maritime Museum is dedicated to preserving and disseminating this rich maritime history and culture of the municipality, which dates back centuries of activities linked to the sea and navigation.

The land of Esposende was renowned for its remarkable capacity for shipbuilding and repair. In the 16th century, D. Sebastião granted it a Charter of Privilege, highlighting it for the production of caravels. The history of the Confraria dos Mareantes (Brotherhood of Seafarers), with its chapel dating from the late 16th century, also reflects the tradition and importance of seafaring life for the local urbanity.

Collections and Narratives

The museum's collection comprises various valuable collections, mostly resulting from donations from Esposende families with connections to the maritime and fishing world. These assets (objects, documents, photographs, and works of art) bear witness to the experiences, challenges, and traditions of generations of men and women who dedicated their lives to the sea and the river.

On the first floor, visitors can find the Tower of Memory, a remarkable photographic compilation of maritime registrants from the Esposende delegation, covering the period between 1893 and 1962. This specific collection, which gathers about a thousand images, constitutes a visual tribute to the memory and legacy of those who shaped Esposende's maritime identity.
