The Santa Rita Hydroelectric Museum is located in the Santa Rita area, part of the locality of Golães, in the municipality of Fafe. Its placement reflects the importance of the location for the operation of the old power plant that originated it, being situated in a geographical context where water was, and is, a central element.
The history of this museum begins with the Santa Rita Hydroelectric Power Plant, inaugurated on October 5, 1914. This plant played a decisive role for its time, by enabling the provision of a public electricity service network to the then-village of Fafe. Due to its historical and cultural value, the Santa Rita Hydroelectric Power Plant is recognized as a significant landmark in the electrification process of northwest Portugal. Its importance is such that it was the first regional electricity museum to be created in the country, and today it is part of the national network of energy museums.
What can be observed in this museum are the original installations and equipment of the old power plant, which are maintained in good condition. The space has been carefully musealized to present a collection of industrial archaeology pieces and elements, all intimately linked to the production of electrical energy. One of the most fascinating aspects is the demonstration of how the essential driving force for the entire operation was the water from the Vizela river. The museum houses a vast collection of objects, displayed both inside and outside the building, which allow for an understanding of the evolution and impact of hydroelectric power generation.
