The Vizela Volunteer Firefighters Museum is located in the area of Caldas de Vizela, in the heart of Vizela town. This central location allows visitors easy access, making the museum an integral part of the town's urban fabric.
Inaugurated in May 2017, the Vizela Volunteer Firefighters Museum emerged as a way to celebrate 140 years of existence of the Royal Humanitarian Association of Vizela Volunteer Firefighters, marking the deep historical roots and continuous service of the corporation. Its creation was the result of a dedicated effort to preserve and present the valuable legacy of the local firefighters. The space that now houses the museum underwent a careful refurbishment, designed by Vizela architect Filipe Costa, transforming it into a suitable place for safeguarding this heritage.
The museum's exhibition path offers a detailed overview of the evolution of the Vizela fire brigade, from its origins to the present day. Visitors can admire a diverse collection, which includes a selection of old vehicles and equipment, testaments to technological and operational evolution over time. The exhibitions are thematic, addressing crucial moments such as the founding of the association in 1877, life in the old barracks, and the routine of emergency response. There are also sections dedicated to uniforms worn in different eras, major occurrences that marked local history, and even the unique presence of the corporation's musical band. The museum thus provides a deep understanding of the firefighters' role in the Vizela community, culminating with a reflection on their current activity.
