The Gold Museum is located in the parish of Travassos, in the area known as Bustelos, within the municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso. The choice of this location reflects the strong historical and cultural connection of the parish with the art of goldsmithing, particularly with filigree, making its presence in Travassos an element of great local significance.
This museum was created with the aim of recognizing and preserving the value of artisanal gold work. Its existence is the result of a long process that began to be conceived in the 1980s, gained decisive momentum from 1993, and became a reality with its opening to the public in March 2001. It represents a continuous effort to dignify this ancestral art.
The origin of the collection exhibited in the museum is intimately linked to the passion and dedication of a local goldsmith, Mr. Francisco de Carvalho e Sousa. Over fifty years dedicated to goldsmithing, he assembled a vast collection of pieces and documentation that became the foundation for the creation of this cultural institution.
Travassos keeps the tradition of gold alive, still boasting active artisanal workshops and traces of many others that marked the past. The museum aims to be an active agent in this dynamic, not only by preserving memory but also by collaborating in the vitality of existing workshops and in the eventual recovery of historical spaces. It acts as a focal point for revitalizing traditional knowledge within the surrounding community.
Due to its particular nature, visits to the Travassos Gold Museum are organized by prior appointment. This condition allows for proper management of available resources, ensuring that visitors can have an organized and fulfilling experience, dedicated to the rich universe of artisanal gold.
