The museum is located at Rua Comendador Castro Alves, No. 391, in the Bairro neighborhood of Vila Nova de Famalicão. The surroundings are characterized by quiet residential streets, with small green areas complementing the environment.
In the vicinity, public gardens and traditional urban elements can be observed, providing a welcoming setting before or after your visit.
Inaugurated in 1987, the space emerged as an extension of the School of Artistic Ceramics created in 1979 by Comendador Manuel Maria Castro Alves. The initiative had the support of painters Júlio Resende and Francisco Laranjo and aimed to keep local artisanal techniques alive.
The Castro Alves Foundation has since positioned itself as the guardian of centuries-old knowledge, promoting creation in clay and gathering consistent testimony of the evolution of ceramics in the region.
The collection is divided into two nuclei (pottery and ceramic sculptures), distributed across three rooms totaling approximately 400 m². More than 1300 pieces are gathered, illustrating different phases of the artisans' creativity.
Architect Fernando Lanhas conceived the museographic project to create fluid pathways and highlight each work through focused lighting, allowing for meticulous appreciation of colors, textures, and forms.
