The Fermentões Agriculture Museum is located in the village of Fermentões, within the municipality of Guimarães. It occupies the building that once housed the local primary school, thus situated in the heart of this community, in a peaceful environment connected to the land's roots.
This museum has a particular history, as it was born from an initiative of the local inhabitants themselves. It all began with exhibitions in the 1970s, carried out by the population. In 1983, it officially took shape as a museum, installed in the old school building. It is a creation of the community, through the Casa do Povo de Fermentões (People's House of Fermentões), with the purpose of safeguarding the history, knowledge, and way of life that shaped this land, serving as a link between the past and future generations.
The museum gathers a vast collection of objects, many of them collected from farmers and farms in the region. It's not just about agricultural tools; each piece carries the marks of time and the labor of those who worked the land and earned their living. The collection, gathered and preserved with dedication, offers a deep insight into various facets of rural life, from field work to traditional crafts and the domestic environment, testifying to the resilience and ingenuity of the local people.
As you explore the museum, you discover a series of spaces dedicated to different aspects of country life. There is an area focused on vinho verde (green wine), where you can see the tools used in vineyards and wine production. Another room is dedicated to linen, showing the process from plant to fabric, including a weaving space. Rural crafts are also represented, with tools from carpenters, blacksmiths, and other artisans. The recreation of a farmer's kitchen, with its oven and utensils, illustrates the domestic environment and traditional bread making, with references to local mills, completing a vivid portrait of daily life from yesteryear.
More than a collection of old pieces, the Fermentões Agriculture Museum preserves the memory and soul of the community that created and keeps it alive. Each object tells a story of hard work, sweat, and resilience, allowing one to feel the deep connection to past generations who, with their hands in the earth, shaped the local identity. It is a place that invites reflection on the cultural and human heritage of this region, a tribute to the farmers and artisans who left their legacy.
