The Barcelos Archaeological Museum is located in a green area by the bank of the Cávado River, in the Misericórdia area, very close to the old bridge that provides access to the city. Its position in the urban landscape, embraced by remnants of medieval walls to the east and a riverside park to the west, gives it a unique atmosphere. Those arriving in the town, coming from the south across the bridge, immediately encounter this site.
What constitutes the Archaeological Museum are the imposing ruins of the old Palace of the Counts of Barcelos, who were also Dukes of Bragança. This construction dates back to the early 15th century, commissioned by D. Afonso, a prominent figure of the era. With an appearance resembling a palace-castle and notable tall chimneys, the building was a symbol of its owner's growing power and wealth, standing out in the landscape. It served as a residence for the Counts until the 17th century, subsequently entering a period of decline, exacerbated by the 1755 earthquake. The remnants that withstood time and destruction are now the setting for this open-air museum.
Within the museum's perimeter, it is possible to observe various pieces that recount the history of human occupation in the Barcelos region throughout the ages. The exhibited collection includes medieval sarcophagi, elements related to heraldry, markers denoting the presence of the House of Bragança, and various architectural fragments from religious buildings and noble houses that no longer exist. These pieces, arranged within the ruins, offer direct contact with past eras.
Among the pieces that can be found in the museum, the Cruzeiro do Senhor do Galo (Lord of the Rooster Cross) stands out particularly. Originating from Barcelinhos, on the other bank of the river, this cross dates back to the early 18th century. Its interest lies in the low-relief representations that narrate the well-known and ancient legend associated with the Rooster of Barcelos, one of the city's most iconic symbols.
