Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, the walls protected Guimarães and connected the upper part of the town, where the Castle is located, to the lower part. They were completed during the reign of King D. Dinis.
, Avenida Alberto Sampaio: Here you will find the largest preserved section of the wall.
, Torre da Alfândega (Customs Tower): A strategic point of defense, it is located near Praça do Toural (Toural Square).
, Rua de Santo António (Saint Anthony Street): Small stretch of the wall still visible between the houses.
The walls have been a National Monument since 1910 and are part of the protected area of the historic center of Guimarães.
You can visit the walls from various streets, such as Avenida Alberto Sampaio, Avenida D. Afonso Henriques and Praça do Toural.
Some parts, such as the pedestrian path on Avenida Alberto Sampaio, have been restored for visits.
The walls witnessed important events, such as the sieges of the city in the 14th century, and some towers were demolished over the years.
