In the municipality of Celorico de Basto, in Britelo, are located the Britelo Mills, an integral part of the Freixieiro Urban Park. This urban green space extends along the Freixieiro River, offering well-maintained pedestrian paths, marked by plane trees and iron bridges that cross the river and the old water channels. It is a central place in the village, where architectural heritage harmoniously blends with nature, providing a serene environment for visitors.
The Britelo Mills are a testament to the engineering and daily life of past centuries, likely dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries. This hydraulic complex was fundamental for the local community, dedicated to two essential activities: the milling of cereals to produce flour and the processing of flax, a textile fiber of great importance. Their presence recalls a time when water energy powered much of the economic and agricultural life.
The complex consists of two distinct mills and the old miller's house, all built mainly of granite, with their robust rustic stonework. One of the mills, a horizontal-wheel mill, was intended for milling cereals, with its two-story structure where the force of water drove the millstones. Next to it, the flax mill was dedicated to the scutching of flax, a process that separated its fibers, and is easily identifiable by its large vertical iron wheel. Complementing this complex is the miller's house, a dwelling with a porch and openings at river water level, reflecting the living and working conditions on site. The network of granite masonry water channels, with iron sluice gates, demonstrates mastery in water management.
Beyond their historical and architectural relevance, the Britelo Mills today constitute a space for leisure and socializing for all seeking a tranquil refuge. Integrated into a well-maintained park, the place invites relaxed strolls along the riverbanks. It is possible to find benches for resting, tables that allow for enjoying an outdoor snack, and even areas dedicated to simple recreational activities, making it a pleasant meeting point and a setting for moments of tranquility in contact with history and nature.
