The Menhir of S. Bartolomeu do Mar stands in the tranquil locality of S. Bartolomeu do Mar, situated within the municipality of Esposende. It is located in a flat, rural setting, often flanked by agricultural fields, offering unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. Its proximity to the new Church of S. Bartolomeu do Mar and the Atlantic coast, approximately 750 meters to the west, gives it a unique context where ancestral history intersects with coastal life.
This imposing granite monolith, approximately two meters and ten centimeters tall, is one of the few of its kind north of the Douro River. Dating from the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age (between the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC), the menhir is a landmark of ancient megalithic culture. Its form suggests a certain anthropomorphism, especially at the top, and its surface exhibits several engraved cup marks, making it a transitional example between a simple menhir and a statue-menhir. These monuments would have had, at the time, a devotional function, associated with fertility cults.
The Menhir of S. Bartolomeu do Mar is not just an ancient stone; it is a repository of enduring stories and beliefs. Locally known as "Padrão" or "Pedrão", this monument is steeped in strong popular tradition. Local legend states that the menhir possesses a protective power over the land, and that its removal would bring great misfortunes to the region, such as the sea invading the fertile fields and their consequent sterilization. This narrative underscores the profound connection between the natural element, heritage, and the community's cultural identity.
