The statue of Commander Santos da Cunha is located in the Maximinos area, one of Braga's urban access points. It is specifically placed in a roundabout that was named after the honoured figure. Its position is striking for those arriving in the city from the EN14, from the South, functioning as a point of reference and welcome.
This sculpture was inaugurated on November 10, 1984, with the purpose of recognizing the importance of António Maria Santos da Cunha. Born in Braga in 1911, he dedicated a significant part of his life to the interests of the city. He held prominent positions in local public administration, notably as Mayor of Braga between 1949 and 1961. The statue perpetuates the memory of a citizen who dedicated himself to Braga's civic life.
The statue is a creation by the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida, a recognized name in the Portuguese artistic scene. The figure, in bronze, rests on a robust pedestal clad in granite, which rises to about 7.50 meters in height. The statue's posture suggests a welcoming gesture, as if Commander Santos da Cunha were receiving those approaching the city. On the body of the pedestal, a simple inscription indicates the birth and death dates of the honoured figure.
