The Chapel of Santa Marta do Leão is located on Santa Marta Hill, an area popularly known as Falperra, in the parish union of Nogueira, Fraião and Lamaçães, municipality of Braga. This elevation is characterized by its dense tree cover, which lends the place an atmosphere of serenity and tranquility, inviting contact with nature. Its position offers an environment for pause and contemplation, easily integrated into the itinerary of those visiting the region.
This is one of the oldest and most significant places of worship in the city of Braga, with devotion to Saint Martha enduring since time immemorial. The chapel represents the heart of this tradition, continuing to attract pilgrims and visitors moved by faith or curiosity. Annually, in mid-July, the Chapel of Santa Marta do Leão hosts the vibrant Romaria de Santa Marta do Leão (pilgrimage of Santa Marta do Leão), a moment of celebration and faith that annually revives local traditions.
The designation "do Leão" (of the Lion) accompanying the chapel's name originates from a local peculiarity: an old fountain located near the temple. This fountain is notable for displaying an imposing granite sculpture of a lion, a work that stands out in the landscape and has become a distinctive element of the place, giving it a unique and memorable identity.
Surrounding the Chapel of Santa Marta do Leão is a pleasant green area, distinguished by large trees. This space invites relaxation and socialising, especially on warmer days, by providing shade and coolness. Equipped with stone tables and benches, and with access to drinking water, this location offers a comfortable resting point, complementing a visit to the chapel with the opportunity to enjoy the surrounding natural environment.
