Situated in the heart of the city of Braga, Largo da Senhora-a-Branca is located in the parish of São José de São Lázaro and São João do Souto. This urban space offers a haven of tranquility, serving as a confluence point in the dynamism of Braga's urban fabric. Its position invites contemplation of the city environment, while maintaining an atmosphere of serenity.
Formerly known as "Campo de Santana," Largo da Senhora-a-Branca has deep roots in Braga's history. Its current designation and the configuration observed today are intrinsically linked to the construction of the imposing Igreja de Nossa Senhora-a-Branca. The name by which it is presently known derives directly from this church, whose facade displays, in a central niche, an image of the Virgin dressed in white, a particularity that originated its popular designation.
The church building dates back to the 18th century, although there are records of a previous hermitage on the site since the 14th century, attesting to the antiquity of Marian devotion in this location. This historical journey enriches the square's identity, making it a testament to Braga's urban and religious evolution.
The square has a slightly irregular shape, molded by the natural slope of the terrain, and is accentuated by an inviting staircase that leads to its central point. In this space, the historic Cruzeiro de Santana stands out, a stone cross classified as a National Monument, evoking the site's former name.
The meticulously maintained gardens, adorned with roses and various tree species, provide stone benches that invite rest and observation of the surrounding environment. The imposing facade of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora-a-Branca lends the square a significant architectural landmark. Additionally, the space houses several sculptures, including works dedicated to prominent figures such as Pope Pius XII and the surgeon Alberto Cruz, enriching its artistic and cultural heritage and inviting reflection.
