It is located in Caldas das Taipas, a locality in the municipality of Guimarães.
It is a Roman inscription dating from 103 AD, made on a large granite rock, known by various names, such as Ara de Trajano, Penedo de Trajano, Penedo da Moura or Ara de Nerva.
The inscription on the stone refers to Emperor Trajan and his greatness. It describes his conquests and titles, including being emperor, consul and "father of the fatherland". It is an important historical piece that dates back to the period of the Roman Empire.
The monument is carved into one face of a granite block, about 3 meters high per face. The inscription is well preserved and easily visible.
In 1910, the monument was classified as a National Monument, which highlights its historical and cultural value.
This monument is one of the most significant Roman remains in the region and represents a testimony to the Roman presence in Portugal.
The name "Ara de Trajano" was also adopted by a Family Health Unit in Caldas das Taipas, known as USF Ara de Trajano.
