The Biscainhos Palace Gardens are located in the heart of Braga city, in the historic Sé area. Once situated outside the ancient medieval walls, this site was conceived as a space of serenity, removed from the urban bustle. Today, it retains this characteristic, offering a calm and pleasant environment for those exploring the city.
This garden is a remarkable example of Baroque landscape architecture in Portugal, recognized as one of the most expressive testimonies of this style in the country. Its design reflects the grandeur and detail typical of the period, inviting a leisurely discovery of its nooks and perspectives.
Spanning approximately one hectare, the garden is divided into three distinct levels: the Terreiro, the Formal Garden, and, further down, the Orchard and Vegetable Gardens. The Formal Garden stands out for its meticulous design, with boxwood beds forming intricate patterns, reminiscent of a labyrinth. Along the path, ornamental elements such as elaborate gates, fountain jets, and low walls adorned with tile panels can be found. The presence of century-old Japanese camellias in two summer houses and a variety of architectural and sculptural elements enrich the environment.
Among the rich vegetation, a majestic Tulip Poplar stands out. It is believed that this magnificent tree was planted during the reign of King John V, giving it remarkable longevity. Its stature and history have earned it recognition as a tree of public interest, and it was highlighted in an international competition as one of the notable trees of the year, testifying to its uniqueness.
Considered a haven of tranquility in the center of Braga, the Biscainhos Gardens have been distinguished with a quality seal that integrates them into the "Rota dos Jardins Históricos do Baixo Minho" (Route of Historic Gardens of the Lower Minho). This distinction underscores its value as a preserved green space, ideal for moments of contemplation and leisure, providing a well-being experience for visitors.
