The Calvário Garden is located in the Cumieira neighborhood, in a central position in the town of Fafe. It is built on an elevated site, as if it were a platform above the surrounding terrain.
The main access is generally by ascending an imposing double staircase, with a striking gate at the top, from Largo Ferreira de Melo. There is also an access at the other end, also with double stairs, which connects to a street in the eastern part of the garden.
This garden has its origin in a place formerly known as Outeiro do Calvário, where a small chapel existed. The idea of transforming this space into a public garden emerged at the end of the 19th century, as part of the urban planning of the then village of Fafe.
The project took shape in 1889, and its construction was largely made possible by the financial support of an emigrant from Fafe who prospered in Brazil. It was inaugurated on December 26, 1892, becoming, since then, the most significant public garden in the city.
With a well-defined rectangular shape, the Calvário Garden is bordered by walls. Exploring the space, one finds a bandstand dating from the 19th century, a testament to the era when music and social events enlivened these places.
Other notable elements include a fountain with a central basin and a tranquil lake. The lake is crossed by a uniquely styled bridge, with sinuous lines and a touch that evokes Gothic Revivalism, an interesting detail in the garden's landscape.
The presence of vegetation is strong in the garden, with leafy trees such as cedars, linden trees, and northern oaks delimiting and enriching the space. This abundant foliage helps to create an inviting and tranquil environment.
It is a place that invites rest, a calm stroll, and serene socializing. The atmosphere, with its romantic characteristics, has maintained its essence as a privileged space for leisure and contemplation.
Its elevated location not only gives it prominence in the urban landscape but also allows, from certain points, to glimpse some panoramic views of the surrounding area, even with the proximity of buildings.
