The Garden of the Pousada de Santa Marinha is located in the Costa area of Guimarães. It is situated on the western slope of the Serra de Santa Catarina, a side of Monte da Penha. This elevated position allows for views of the urban area of Guimarães, offering a broad perspective of the city. Surrounded by a vast wooded area, which constitutes the old monastic enclosure, the garden benefits from a natural and serene setting.

Origins and Historical Legacy

The history of this garden is intrinsically linked to that of the former monastery from which it originated, founded in the 12th century. Over the centuries, and particularly from the 16th century onwards, when it passed to the Order of São Jerónimo, the monastic enclosure underwent expansions and improvements. These green spaces were valued both for their productive function and for their recreational use. The current design of the garden, which combines formal elements with the natural environment, is largely the result of a notable landscape rehabilitation intervention that occurred in the 1970s.

Landscape and Architectural Design

The garden is characterized by a formal design, marked by its adaptation to the sloping terrain through a series of terraces. A monumental granite staircase, adorned with spheres on the platforms, establishes the connection between the different levels. On one of the terraces, a large circular tank creates a point of visual interest and invites contemplation. The flowerbeds, defined by boxwood hedges, display geometric patterns, and other elements such as a small formal garden with a mosaic of varied flowerbeds and a modern abstract sculpture also stand out.

Nature and Water Features

The natural richness of the garden is evident in its extensive lawn areas and botanical diversity. A variety of tree species are observed, such as camellias, lime trees, plane trees, and oaks, in addition to an orange grove. One of the most distinctive features is the lake with a grotto, which integrates naturally into the hillside. Here, water from a spring cascades over rocks, providing an atmosphere of freshness and tranquility. The space is also punctuated by other fountains and tanks, including one with dolphin sculptures, which contribute to the relaxing atmosphere of the place.
