The Parish Church of Antas, dedicated to Saint Pelagius (São Paio), is located in the town of Antas, more precisely in the area known as São Paio de Cima. This parish is part of the municipality of Esposende. The temple is situated in the urban area, serving as a central point for the community.
This place of worship boasts a history that dates back to very ancient times. There is evidence that a church already existed here in the 12th century, confirmed by a discovered inscription dating from 1125, attesting to its remarkable antiquity.
The edifice we can admire today is the result of a substantial remodeling and expansion that took place in 1879. It was during this intervention that the church acquired its current architectural features, under the direction of Father Bento José da Mota.
The church features a predominantly neoclassical style. Its façade, built from characteristic regional granite, stands out for its gently undulating (counter-curved) shape and the richness of the decorative elements that adorn it.
At the center of the façade, the bell tower stands imposing. On it, one can observe an arched doorway at the bottom, a large window above, and a niche housing the image of the patron saint. The tower culminates in a decorated dome topped by a cross.
Inside, the church is composed of three naves. One of the points of greatest interest is the chancel, notable for its rich gilded woodwork. The artistic ensemble is complemented by the ceilings, altarpieces, tiles, and stained-glass windows, which contribute to the beauty and atmosphere of the space.
The church is consecrated to Saint Pelagius (São Paio), a figure with a remarkable history in the medieval Iberian Peninsula. He is a venerated saint associated with the context of the Christian Reconquista.
The narrative about Saint Pelagius tells that he was a young man who, in the 10th century, was taken prisoner in Córdoba. He reportedly refused to renounce his faith and yield to other pressures, eventually being martyred. This story of resistance and devotion confers a particular meaning to the dedication of this temple.
