The Amparo Parish Church stands in the Portela area, next to the center of Póvoa de Lanhoso, on a slightly elevated spot that offers a wide perspective over the urban surroundings. In front of it, the paved street and pedestrian crossing frame the white facade, contrasting with the brown of the ashlar stones that delimit doors and windows.
In the vicinity, one observes typical Minho houses and small green areas that soften the traffic of the main road, lending the space a tranquil character, even on busy days in the town.
The building dates back to the late 19th century, erected through the initiatives of Manuel Joaquim Barbosa Castro, a local figure known as a “returnee Brazilian.” Founded in 1925 as a parish by Archbishop D. Manuel Vieira de Matos, the church is now preparing to mark its centenary, celebrating the continuity of baptism ceremonies in the marble baptismal font, whose waters have already touched several generations of parishioners.
After approximately two years of restoration work, highlights include the reinforcement of the electrical system, the restoration of the interior paintings, and the enhancement of the interior gilded woodwork, reinforcing the balance between tradition and functionality.
The facade features sober lines, dominated by a central double-door portal made of dark red painted wood and an upper portal with a glazed window, surmounted by a clock and a cross. To the right, the bell tower culminates in a triangular spire, creating a play of volumes against the blue sky.
On the interior walls, the contrast between the granite of the side arcades and the painted panels on the ceiling enhances the space of the main altar, enriched by golden details. The baptismal font, made of worked marble, stands out as a central piece of community memory, enveloped in an atmosphere of serenity.
