The Mother Church of São João is integrated into the urban fabric of Caldas de Vizela, in the area corresponding to the parish of São João. The building occupies a central position in its immediate surroundings, serving as a landmark in the local landscape.
This religious temple features a Neo-Gothic architectural style, characteristic of early 20th-century constructions. Its construction, carried out between 1904 and 1909, was predominantly done in granite, a material that gives it an imposing and durable appearance. On the main façade, a large tower stands out, rising to mark the church's presence in its urban context.
Inside the church, attention is drawn to the artistic details. Prominent features include the carved altarpieces, whose work evokes styles from the Joanine period, lending a sense of historical richness to the space, despite its later construction. Other elements of interest include the medallions adorning the tabernacles and side altars, as well as the lining of the niches, details that reflect the interventions and remodelling carried out over time, complementing the aesthetic of the interior space.
